An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
