Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Haze Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the city recorded an AQI above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Changes

Since 2020, officials had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that blankets the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Yet in recent months, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judges agreed to the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around the night hours to the most severe readings seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the capital have continued as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing approximately 10k early deaths each year in the capital.
